Bruno Movie Review/Impact on Gay Rights

Today, I decided to see Bruno. After seeing Cohen’s Borat and all of the advertisements for this new film. I set my expectations high as I enjoyed Borat for its incredible way of pushing the envelope while at the same time, exposing those who his character meets true feelings.

The story line to the film is very similar to that of Borat. Bruno starts out as a fashon icon in Austria who gets ousted and heads to America to become a celebrity.

The movie is over the top with graphic images of male genitalia at one point which is really not done in any sort of classy or creative way that adds anything to the story. This made for an uncomfortable few moments during the film.

The crude behavior is not to say that I didn’t get any laughs from the film. Some of the things that Bruno did were pretty hiliarious. It seems however, that most of the parts that were highlighted in the trailer were the main focus in the movie. If you watch the trailer, it should be enough to hold you over until the movie comes out on DVD should you still decide that you want to see it.
Some parents brought their children to see this movie. I would not recommend this at all. Anyone with common sense would know not to bring the young kids along but it seems like there were quite a few in the theater.

Because of how overthetop this film was, I don’t know that it helped the gay cause at all. Bruno exagerates every gay sterotype there is and throws it in people’s face in the film. Those who I think that are going to see the film are the younger generation of 18-25 year olds, gay people, and perhaps the Borat fans that want to see what Coehen is up to next. For these people, I don’t think that the movie is going to change the way they feel about gays because it is so overthetop and exagerated. However, I do see the movie having a negative impact on those who do not see the film but perhaps just see the trailer or hear about it from other people. Frankly, this movie is outragous and very “in your face” and I totally understand how it would make some uncomfortable to watch or even think about.

Have you seen the movei? If so, let me know what you think. Does Bruno go to far? Do you think that it has a positive or negative impact on gay people and thieir causes?

I feel like there are two things that there are two types of mindsets that are gonna come walking out of the movie. The first is the educated minded person who can laugh at Cohen using gay stereotypes to bring out the laden homophobia in some people, truly showing their natures. It’s a social experiment/satire

Now we have the uneducated mind (see: the red states). These people will come out of the movie laughing at the antics of a man acting like one of those queer-mo-sexuals.

IN the end, i feel like people’s opinions will not be swayed as they will both get some laughs out of the movie, if for one reason or the other.
